Should I join a server to the domain before I dcpromo it to a DC?

I think you should - here’s why:
When promoting a server to a DC it queries DNS to find a another DC to pull a replica from. At this point, it doesn’t matter if you running dcpromo right away of if you have a backup to pre-populate AD there - it will contact another DC anyway.
